Yoga is a great deal more than just a physical exercise. It is a philosophy and a lifestyle, composed of several different techniques, and that has been around for at least 5 thousand years. Yoga therapy means therapy through Yoga and Ayurveda (the science of life). It is the practical application of Yoga and Ayurvedas’ basic knowledge and techniques, put in place to recover ones integral health. The main techniques used are postures (specific psychophysical exercises – Asanas), breathing techniques (Pranayama), conscientious relaxation, concentration, meditation and positive thinking and healthy eating. Yoga, being an integral system, brings peace, happiness, balance, good health and self-knowledge.
Up until the mid 20th century knowledge of the effects of yoga was mainly based on empirical evidence. It was not until the 1960s that scientific research on the effects of yoga was undertaken. There is now evidence that with regular yoga practice the immune system is strengthened, heart rate and blood pressure decrease, metabolism is better balanced, breathing becomes deeper and slower, stress hormones are reduced, and muscles are used more efficiently.
There are many relevant and profound empirical, philosophical, and medical considerations about yoga and the effects of practicing yoga. Practicing yoga is both a science and an art.
The key to success in yoga therapy is to feel connected to your own healing.
May we all awaken our minds and lighten our Hearts.
